The National Water Supply & Drainage Board (NWS&DB) was established in 1975

The National Water Supply & Drainage Board  was established in 1975 as a statutory body with the prime objective of providing the nation with safe drinking water facility and managing disposal of urban sewer through large scale sewerage systems. Before becoming NWS&DB, it was engaged in similar services in smaller scale under the administration of Public Works Department . The NWS&DB became more independent and empowered with a new Ministry of Irrigation, Power & Highways and at present it has a ministry of its own as Ministry of Water Supply.

Gampaha Region

Gampaha and Kelaniya Regions are under purview of Western/ North RSC which is situated in Kadawatha. The RSC (Western/ North) mainly provides technical & financial support for implementing the Rehabilitation/ Augmentation projects as well as necessary procurement support.

Gampaha Region serves a considerable extent of Gampaha District with a percentage of 30% safe drinking water coverage. The Gampaha Manager’s Office is conveniently situated in the town’s center on Mihindu Mawatha. It is the administration centre of 02 No of Area Engineer’s Offices, 15 No of Water Supply Schemes (WSSs), Regional Laboratory, Regional Workshop & Regional stores with a total of 175 No of dedicated & skillful staff. Gampaha Region is among the top in providing new connections in the recent past and its service has been recognized many a time with awards for productivity, service excellence etc. With a motto of “For a Better Service through Corporate Responsibility”, the Gampaha Region is looking forward to improve and expand its service further through the constant support & guidance of the Regional Support Centre (Western/ North).    

There are altogether 15 No of WSSs being operated under the Area Engineers of Gampaha and Negombo. These WSSs which are under the supervision of 07 Nos of Officers in Charge, provide safe drinking water to approx. 106081 No of Households, Government/ Private/ Religious institutions, CBO Water Supply Schemes etc. Maintaining water quality being an essential part of the service, the Regional Laboratory is engaged in constant monitoring of water quality & maintaining its standards. In order to ensure an uninterrupted and hassle-free operation of WSSs, the Regional Workshop is entrusted with the responsibility of attending to necessary maintenance & repair works of M&E machinery & equipment.
